  5x actual size

In the New Zealand Gazette of 18th April 1877 the following notice was published:

"1. On and after the first day of July 1877 all duties, fees, fines and penalties payable to ant Registrar of Deeds or District Land Registrar within the colony of New Zealand by virtue of his office shall be payable by stamps in the same manner hereinafter provided."

All values from 1/- to £10 were of the same design. The stamps were printed from electrotype on paper watermarked 'NZ and star' spaced 6mm and all three contemporary perforating machines were used (single line gauging 12½ and nearly 12, and a comb machine gauging 12x11½.)

The 1/- value was first issued in a larger size (21x25mm instead of 18x22mm) although the design was similar. The stamps became obsolete in 1881.
