New Zealand's first stamps were printed in London and issued in July 1855. This set comprised the 1d, 2d and 1/- values. The 6d appeared in 1859 and the 3d in 1862.

The perforated series added the 1d brown, 2d orange, 4d rose, then 4d yellow and the 6d blue issues.

There is plenty to interest the specialist in these issues with changes in paper, perforations, watermarks and printers. There are also many distinct shade variations, re-entries and retouches.
