1. August Meeting

 

The next meeting of the Society will be held at 7.30pm on Tuesday 12 August in the first floor rooms of Turnbull House, Bowen Street, Wellington.

 

Note:  The library will be open for members from 7.00pm to 7.25pm on meeting nights.

-Speaker: Patrick Brownsey on Ferns

 

Patrick will be making this presentation which will look at ferns through a philatelic lens, examining their diversity and natural history, the people who first collected and named New Zealand ferns, the Victorian fern craze and its aftermath, the use of the fern as a design element in philately, its evolution as an emblem of New Zealand identity, and the way it has been used to promote many aspects of our social and sporting heritage.  This is a most unusual topic and one that is sure to be very, very interesting. So come along and enjoy this special evening.

 

2. July Meeting

3. Tarapex 2008

The society has decided to hold their November monthly meeting at Tarapex with an open invitation to all societies for their members to attend. Speakers will be advised in due course. 5.  Exhibition Sheet Protectors

These are available from the Philatelic Youth Council. The protectors are made from oriented polypropylene and measure approximately 290 x 255mm. They are side opening for easy use, quite stiff and display well. Prices include GST and postage within New Zealand. Available in packs of 25 @$15.00 or 100 @ $50.00. 6.  New Members

There were three new members during the past month. Royal Lines congratulates and welcomes Barry Moss from Canada, Wallace Craig USA and Byron Wheldale from New Zealand, to the Society.

7.  Postal Sales

May Sale - Again a worthwhile result with sales in the order of $30,000. 27 vendors and 100 bidders participated in the sale. We were pleased that the sheet with missing colour attracted interest, as did the collections of Antarctica and Campbell Island material.  The November sale will feature a number of lots of 1898 Pictorials.

November Sale - Material for this sale should be lotted and sent with covering list to the office no later than August 28. If you can send an additional copy of your list by email using the template, this . WOJ.1ld be much appreciated. If you require a lotting template please contact the office. The sale date is set for 13 November.

 

8.  Wellington philatelic Society - August meeting, an invite

Mike Wilkinson, a member and the Librarian of the New Zealand Society of Great Britain, will be visiting family in Wellington during August and has kindly agreed to provide a talk on 'aspects of New Zealand stamps, postal history etc. during the reign of Edward VII. Both the subject and period are not often covered so this promises to be an interesting and worthwhile evening.  The date is the 25th August, 1st floor, Anvil House, 138 Wakefield Street, Wellington at 7.30pm.

9. Royal Numismatic Society of New Zealand- August meeting, an invite

David Galt, President, has extended an invitation to our members to attend the Mark Stocker presentation on the Designs of Sir Bertram Mackennal on Wednesday 27 August. The meeting will commence at 7.30pm in either the large ground floor room or the Small Gallery at Turnbull House. Sir Bertram's designs include a large number of British stamps, as well as most coin obverses during the reign of George V.  There is no charge so come along for what will be a very interesting evening.

 

10. A familiar face to many, returns

Sue, our Office Manager, is to take a very well earned break from the 26 August until the 7 October.

Jean Kersel, our previous OM has very kindly accepted an invitation to 'hold the fort' during this time.  So there will be a different voice on the phone and a different face in the office!  Jean is coming in the week prior to refresh office procedures.

 

11. Help!

Member Jeff Long has received a request from a collector who wishes to purchase items for a developing exhibit on New Zealand Advice of Delivery material.  This would include the New Zealand Advice of Delivery cards, covers with AR in manuscript or cachet formats, and more recently the yellow labels applied to covers coming from overseas where an AR service has been requested.
