1          August Meeting

Please note that the Library will be open for members from 7.00pm to 7.25pm on meeting nights.

The next meeting of the Society will be held at 7.30pm on Tuesday August 14th, 2007 in the first floor rooms of Turnbull House, Bowen Street, Wellington.

Programme: Business

    • Items of Interest.
    • Speaker: Adam Miller on Copyright Stamps

Adam will be showing much more than just pages of these curious stamps - he'll be aiming to demonstrate both the breadth of usage and depth of specialisation available. Usage on original items will be prevalent, as well' as the record equivalent of Maximaphily. He promises a detour into the world of 78rpm record collecting, and maybe even some aural treats as well!

2          July Meeting                                                                                                    .

President, Brian Vincent, welcomed members on a very cold and wet winter's evening. He began the meeting with the. very sad news that two members had recently passed away- John Thomson Ca Vice President) and David Jarvis Ca Life Member). Brian noted that the Society and philately in general will miss the contributions and support of these two distinguished philatelists. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect.                                                                              '

Five members produced the usual array of items of interest, after which Brian invited Geoff Rickards to take the floor for a special display commemorating the introduction of decimal currency 40 years ago to the day. Geoff summarised this piece of philatelic history with the items that were on sale immediately prior to 10 July and those items that were on sale from the introduction of decimal currency. His display included our 3rd Pictorials, Commemoratives, Health, Life Insurance etc., and our 'lost' Postage Dues, Airs, Express Delivery and finally, the Ross Dependency sterling and decimal sets postmarked last/first day at Scott Base.

Brian then presented his display for the evening beginning with a range of stamps issued by Tannu Tuva, a small region on the Mongolian border now incorporated into Russia. Next was a display of the Game Bird stamps of New Zealand - all used on actual Game Bird Licences from 1996 through to 2003 inclusive (Brian's source for these items - his nephew - is now living in Ireland, so his collection stopped at the 2003 stamp).                                                                              .

The next frame featured the TV Licence fee stamps of Great Britain from 1974 to 1998, each one used on the receiving licence document. It was interesting to note that the fee had risen from $7 to $91.50 over this period. A series of commemorative stamps from the USA featuring jazz, blues and popular singers, jazz musicians and Bandleaders, on commemorative panels were also shown.

Brian then concluded his varied display with some newly mounted material from his boxes of rugby items focussing on items that he had not previously displayed including GB Oxfam Booklets which showed a rugby ball on one of the interleaving advert pages and a 1930 New Zealand booklet with an advel1 for rugby balls. He showed several booklets from New Zealand's Alternative Postal Operators with a rugby connection, some early postal stationery relating to rugby and some of the more modern background material.

Norman Banfield proposed a vote of thanks to Brian on behalf of those present.
